The Bastakiya District in Dubai is known for its fascinating
century old architecture and the urban planning. An
old residential area along the famous Dubai
Creek in Bur Dubai, Bastakia District dates back
to the early 20th century. Measuring approx. 300 meters
in length and 200 meters in width, the old Bastakiya
area with its narrow lanes and tall wind towers has
always fascinated visitors. Its amazing wind-towers,
gypsum decorations and woodwork never fail to impress
visitors.
One can find largest concentration of traditionally
designed courtyard houses to the east of Al
Fahidi Fort, all built within wind towers. These
rooftop wind towers were not merely decorative, but
were used for the purpose of cooling houses. Dubai Municipality
has been involved in renovate all the historic buildings
of the Bastakiya area since December 2001.
The Bastakiya area now has a museum, cultural center,
and an art gallery, along with restaurants and traditional
markets. It's an effort to provide visitors an insight
into the traditional life and cultural heritage of the
area. The Majlis Gallery and XVA, an old traditional
restored house with a hotel, gallery and café, are must
visit attractions on your visit to Bastakiya District.
