The most glamorous world sport, tennis has carved a niche for itself in Dubai as well. Undoubtedly one of the most watched sports in Dubai, tennis has managed to stir an interest amongst sports lovers and authorities in this city.

In Dubai, the sport of tennis has grown over the years, with the number of tennis events constantly on the rise. The Dubai Tennis Championships is today one of the most-awaited events in the global tennis calendar.

Also known as the Dubai Tennis Open, this event was started in 1993 and is governed by the UAE Tennis Association. An integral part of the ATP and WTA tennis tours, Dubai Tennis Championships has helped in the promotion of tennis in Dubai.

Held at the Dubai Tennis Stadium, this tennis event is organized by Dubai Duty Free Aviation Club Tennis Center. An outdoor hardcourt tournament, it is held in a 5,000-seater stadium. This stadium has a special VIP area and Royal enclosures.

Tennis has also helped in the growth of tourism in Dubai. Fans of this sport come from various corners of the globe especially for this event. Usually held in February or March, this tennis event is ideally scheduled alongside other popular events and exhibitions in Dubai.

Dubai Tennis Championships has been participated in by some of the biggest names in the tennis world. Passionately followed by locals and tourists, it has led to an insurmountable craze of tennis in Dubai.

Rafael Nadal of Spain defeated the inimitable world number one Roger Federer of Switzerland in an enthralling contest to win the Dubai Tennis Championships men's singles. Federer, a regular here, has won this event on three occasions.

On the WTA front, the Dubai Tennis Championships women's singles was won by Justin Henin-Hardenne of Belgium, defeating Maria Sharapova of Russia in straight sets.

Sports in Dubai
