Religion in Cairo

The dominant religion in Cairo is Islam. Islam traditions are followed religiously by the people in Cairo and everywhere, one can find mosques and museums depicitng the rich Islam culture. Cairo is mainly inlfuenced by the Arab culture to a large extent, and to a small extent by the neighbouring communities

Education in Cairo

Cairo is home to some very old and influential unviersities - the most famous being Al-Azhar university, which is the oldest university in the Islamic world. The instituion is in close viscinity with the Al-Azhar Mosque, which is again the oldest mosque in Cairo. Founded in 970, both the mosque and the univeristy occupy esteemed positions and are very influential across Egypt. Some other famous universities include the Cairo University, which was founded in 1908, the American University, founded in 1919, and the Ain Shams - founded in 1950.

Museums in Cairo

The most famous is the Egyptiam Museum, which was founded in 1902. This museum is home to numerous artefacts that date back many centuries. The Museum of Islamic Arts, founded in 1881 has ancient artefacts from the early Islamic civilization while the Coptic Museum, founded in 1910 exhibits the history of the Coptic community. Other museums in Cairo, which tourists can pay a visit, are the El-Gawhara Palace Museum and the Mahmoud Khalil Museum. These museums house some excellent works by Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Peter Paul Rubens.

Cultural Houses in Cairo

The main cultural house in Cairo is the Cairo Opera House, where most of the dramas, films, dance, and music are staged. Then there is the National cultural Center of Cairo, which comprises of seven theatres and concert halls. Many concents and dance operas are held here.

People in Cairo

The people in Cairo are known as Cairenes and most of them are Egyptians except for a small amount of foreginers. Majority of the population follow Islam and are predominantly Sunni Muslims. The minortiy group consists of the Coptic community, who hail from the ancinet Christian community that were residing in Cairo before the arrival of Arabs.
