Tennis in Qatar
Tennis in Qatar started on a small scale but now it
has become so popular that attracts large crowds to
the region.
Growth in popularity of tennis in Qatar started in 9th April 1984 when Qatar Tennis Federation was established. Talented youngsters were selected and were given training by best Arab and International professional trainers.
By 1987 tennis in Qatar became a national obsession and all the major sports clubs included tennis along with all other games. Some of the famous sports clubs where a game of tennis can be played are Al Arabi, Al Saad, Al Ahli, and Al Rayyan. You can also play tennis in Qatar at many tennis centers in AlKhor and Dukhan City.
The first ATP Qatar Open for men was held in January 1993 and US$1.Million was given to the winner of the tournament. Looking at the increasing number of women interested in tennis in Qatar the Qatar Tennis Federation organized the first ladies tennis championship in 2001 the total prize money which is awarded to winner of the tournament is US$600,000. It will not be wrong if we say that tennis is the most popular sport in Qatar. We can notice it by looking at number of tournaments that were played previously and the tournaments that are now being played.
Earlier just three local tournaments were played but now numerous tournaments including those organized by private clubs are held on a regular basis. On your visit to this region you must play or watch the enthusiasm with which tennis in Qatar is played.
